Thanks, oldnovice. I lived in California in 1995-96, but never settled in. Bay Area housing prices were too high for this midwestern boy even back then.

You are not wrong on the housing prices back then and they have even gotten a lot worse to the point that an exodus from some areas has begun.

A couple of months ago I answered the front door where I was greeting by a realtor and a married couple. The realtor said that he wanted to show them our house so they could make me an offer. I said it’s not for sale to which the man of the couple said you haven’t heard our cash offer as money is not an issue! That, to me, took a lot of gall! I stood my ground and said “how much” ... no I told them what I said before, it’s not for sale!

Another example, I just heard on the radio that to live in Marin county you need a minimum income of $125K!

The Mercury news paper reported that a landlord was moving out of the bay area and taking all his tenants with him!
The paper also reported that U Haul prices have increased dramatically IF you want to move out as that would be a one way trip and their trucks/trailers aren’t coming back fast enough. However, moving in is much cheaper.

Yeah, I work for a company that’s based in San Jose, so I’m out there just about every year and get to hear the horror stories. Glad I can live and work here. With Google adding their new building downtown, traffic’s going to get crazy, too.

Thanks, Tom. I prefer the quiet, but will probably be getting a bandsaw from my sweetie’s dad (who has given up woodworking). Cutting ten pieces off a chunk of apple tree this morning has me convinced I’ll spend less time worrying about stock prep that way. Now I need to find room for it (and for the post drill I still don’t have set up).
